How to Seal Thin Wall Conduit Ends

Sealing the ends of a thin-walled conduit -- electrical metallic tubing -- keeps moisture and debris from entering an electrical system. Unlike, rigid metal conduit, EMT can't be threaded to accept standard closer plugs. Instead, EMT conduit requires a specialized end cap that will not reduce the strength of the pipe wall after installation. Correctly installing the end cap is crucial to ensuring that the conduit remains sealed and properly protects the electrical wiring housed inside.

Things You'll Need

  • Intumescent putty
  • EMT pipe cap
  • Rag
  • Phillips screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Roll a piece of intumescent putty into a 3/4-inch diameter ball. Push the ball into the open end of an EMT pipe cap. Force it tight to the sealed end of the cap. Set the assembly aside.

    • 2

Wipe debris from the end of the thin-walled with a rag. Ensure no debris remains around the opening to be sealed.

    • 3

Slide the open end of the EMT cap over the end of the thin-walled conduit. Push it until the sealed end of the cap sits tight to the end of the conduit.

    • 4

Turn both screws -- threaded in the sides of the cap -- clockwise with a Phillips screwdriver until the cap does not pull from the conduit.
