How to Install an Electrical Ground at Home

A properly grounded electrical system is required to have appliances operate safely in your residence. Grounding the electrical circuit allows excess current to be safely dissipated into the earth if a wire or appliance shorts out. Do not install an electrical ground in your home unless you have extensive experience with electricity.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your electrical supplier and tell the representative that you are installing a ground. The utility will turn off the electricity at the nearest utility connection so that you can work safely.

    • 2

Dig a hole about a foot deep and a few inches wide with a hole digger in the ground location. This is typically on the exterior side of the house where the electrical breaker panel is placed.

    • 3

Turn on a garden hose and fill the hole with water.

    • 4

Place the grounding rod in the hole. Tamp the bar up and down several times with your hands or use a rubber mallet to tap the top of the pole. Continue this process until you feel the pole begin to make its way into the ground. Remove the grounding pole.

    • 5

Pour more water in the hole and lower the grounding rod again. Tamp the rod into the hole again and continue tapping the top of the hammer. Continue this process of removing the pole and filling the hole with water until the grounding rod is buried at the required depth.

    • 6

Connect a ground wire to the grounding terminal on the inside circuit breaker by attaching it to the grounding terminal and tightening the connection with a screwdriver. The grounding terminal should be clearly marked and is usually placed on the side or the top of the circuit breaker box. String the cable out through your house as needed to the outside. Use a spade bit or long drill bit to drill holes through the walls, if needed.

    • 7

Connect a grounding clamp to the top of the ground rod. Secure it in place by tightening the ground bolt with a socket wrench. Connect the ground wire from inside to the grounding clamp. Fully buy the rod.

    • 8

Insulate any holes in the walls with weatherproof caulk.

    • 9

Tell the electricity supplier restore the electricity.
