How to Install an Ice Tank

An ice tank is used to provide cold air to a building or an office through a system called thermal storage. It is primarily used as a cost-saving device when cooling a large building in order to save on energy costs. Thermal storage can be used in combination with standard air conditioning equipment or in place of it. It uses a glycol solution cooled to about 25 degrees Fahrenheit as its primary cooling agent.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure you have a flat surface for the ice tank installation. It should be level within 1/16 of an inch if the ice tank is going to work properly and to full capacity. Assemble and install all the loose pieces per the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Complete the glycol connections so the substance can easily travel through the ice tank. Place taps for thermometer and pressure gauges in the glycol piping so you can get a consistent reading on the cooling substance throughout the cooling process.

    • 3

Fill the glycol circuit with the solution to the exact amount prescribed by the manufacturer. Vent air from the ice tank's glycol circuit prior to beginning the start of the refrigeration process.

    • 4

Fill the ice storage cells of the tank with water. Make sure you add algicide to keep the water as clear as possible.
