How To Move Insulation for Electrical Work in the Attic

Safety should be foremost whenever you work with electricity in your home. One of the first rules of a safe work site is to keep it clean so you can see what you're doing. If you need to do electrical work in an attic that is insulated with cellulose or batt insulation, begin by clearing all of the insulation away from the area.

Things You'll Need

  • Flashlight or drop light
  • Trash bags
  • Large dust pan
  • Whisk broom

Instructions

    • 1

Position a flashlight or drop light in your attic if the attic light does not illuminate the area sufficiently.

    • 2

Move batt insulation by lifting it carefully from between the ceiling joists and setting it aside.

    • 3

Move blown-in cellulose insulation by scooping it up with a large dustpan and placing it into trash bags. Avoid compressing the cellulose in the bags. If you leave it loose, you can pour it back into place when you're finished and it will still have insulating value. Use a dustpan rather than a shovel because it's easier to work with in the restricted space of an attic.

    • 4

Sweep up the bits of cellulose around the joists with a whisk broom to create a clean work area before you begin electrical work.
