How to Replace a NuTone Ceiling Heater

A NuTone radiant ceiling heater provides instant heat using a high-wattage infrared bulb. Commonly found in bathrooms, radiant heaters also work well in pool and spa areas -- anywhere you need quick heat while drying off. A NuTone ceiling heater mounts to a joist above your ceiling and connects to standard household wiring. To repair damage or simply to upgrade, you should be able to replace a NuTone ceiling heater in a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electrical circuit that powers the ceiling heater. You can do this by flipping the breaker for that circuit to the “Off” position or by removing the fuse for the circuit. If there are other people in the home, tell them that you will be working on an electrical circuit, and advise them not to touch any breakers or fuses until you’re done.

    • 2

Unscrew the infrared bulb from the NuTone ceiling heater. This will keep the bulb from breaking if you happen to drop or hit the fixture during replacement.

    • 3

Remove the two Phillips screws holding the ceiling plate to the mounting plate. Slide the ceiling plate down the wiring until you can reach the screws in the mounting plate.

    • 4

Remove the two screws that secure the mounting plate to the junction box in the ceiling, using a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the mounting plate off the box to expose the wiring.

    • 5

Unscrew the wiring nuts from the black, white and bare copper wires in the junction box. Remove the ceiling heater and set it aside.

    • 6

Feed the wires of a replacement heater through the front of the ceiling plate and the mounting plate. Connect the bare ends of the wires together using the included wire nuts. Insert the bare ends of the white wires into a wire nut and twist it clockwise until it’s tight. Repeat this process for the black wires and the copper wires.

    • 7

Push the wires into the junction box. Place the mounting plate over the junction box and align the mounting holes with the holes in the junction box. Insert the two screws into the mounting holes and tighten them securely, using the flat-head screwdriver.

    • 8

Slide the ceiling plate up against the mounting plate. Align the holes in the ceiling plate with the holes in the mounting plate. Insert the two Phillips screws into the holes and tighten them.

    • 9

Screw an infrared bulb into the ceiling heater. Turn on the breaker or replace the fuse.
