How to Install a Ceiling Light With No Electrical in a Mobile Home

Mobile homes often require inventive workarounds for the installation of convenient lighting. Installing a ceiling light without hardwiring it into the electrical system allows for the practical addition of inexpensive lights into any room of a mobile home. By purchasing a light that uses a standard electrical cord and plugs into a standard outlet, it is possible to hang the light in the center of the ceiling and run the cord for it back down the wall to the outlet.

Things You'll Need

  • Standard-outlet lamp
  • Stud finder
  • Open eyehook
  • Pliers
  • Drywall anchor
  • Drill

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location at which the ceiling light will be installed. Look for the possibility of joists in the ceiling using the stud finder. Drill a hole into the joist if it is found. Drill in a drywall anchor if the joist cannot be found, as is often the case in mobile homes.

    • 2

Insert an eyehook into the hole or drywall anchor. Rotate the eyehook until it is completely installed in the ceiling, using pliers if necessary to rotate the eyehook.

    • 3

Pass the light through the eyehook and run the cord along the ceiling toward the wall. Staple the cord to the ceiling every 3 feet, being very careful to center the staples on either side of the cord and not pierce it. Staple the cord directly in the corner between the wall and ceiling.

    • 4

Run the cord down the wall, stapling it in place every 3 feet. Continue to staple the cord until it reaches the wall outlet. Plug the cord in and turn the ceiling light on.
