How to Install a GE In-Wall Timer

Any standard wall switch in your home can be replaced with a GE in-wall timer that will turn any device on or off at any time of day or night. The timer can control your lights automatically when you leave for vacation, or turn on the heater in the bathroom 30 minutes before you wake. Installing an in-wall timer can even cut down on energy cost by controlling the length of time your device operates.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the circuit breaker inside the main breaker panel that supplies power to your existing wall switch.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the cover plate to the wall switch. Place a non-contact voltage sensor against each black wire attached to the wall switch. The sensor lights up if electricity is still present at the switch.

    • 3

Remove the screws from the top and the bottom of the wall switch. Pull the switch from the electrical box in the wall.

    • 4

Loosen the two screws on the side of the wall switch to release two black wires. Pull the black wires off the switch. Discard the old switch.

    • 5

Untwist the wire connector holding the white wires together inside the electrical box in the wall. Pull the white wires apart. Do the same with the bare copper wires inside the box.

    • 6

Connect the black wire from the GE in-wall timer to the black wire inside the electrical box that leads back to the breaker panel. Twist a yellow wire connector onto the black wires to secure them together.

    • 7

Secure the black wire inside the box leading to the fixture and the red wire on the GE timer together with another yellow twist-on connector.

    • 8

Twist a yellow wire connector onto the two white wires inside the electrical box and the white wire from the timer. Twist another yellow connector onto the two bare copper wires inside the box and the green wire from the timer.

    • 9

Tuck the wires to the back of the box in the wall. Secure the in-wall timer switch to the box with the screws that came with the device.

    • 10

Cover the GE timer and the box with the wall plate provided with the timer. Secure the plate with the provided screws.

    • 11

Turn on the circuit breaker in the main breaker panel to provide power to your GE in-wall switch.
