How to Change a Wired Door Bell

Doorbells have announced the arrival of visitors for many years. While the hard-wired bell style is still in use, it has evolved from the bell itself to exotic chimes and programmable wireless models. A hard-wired doorbell receives its power from a low-voltage transformer. The doorbell circuit includes a pressure-operated switch which is mounted outside the door. If your doorbell has greeted its last guest, it needs to be changed. Replacing the doorbell is a job you can do using minimal tools and materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch the designated breaker for the doorbell off at the house electrical box.

    • 2

Remove the cover of the doorbell using the appropriate screwdriver. Turn the cover screw counterclockwise.

    • 3

Locate the two wiring terminal connections on the doorbell frame. One terminal is marked for the transformer and the other terminal for the switch.

    • 4

Apply a strip of masking tape to each wire and mark them for identification using a marker. Write “S” for the switch and “T” for the transformer.

    • 5

Loosen the terminal screws with a screwdriver and remove the two wires. Pull the wires out from the frame of the doorbell.

Remove the doorbell mounting screws using a screwdriver. Hold the doorbell in place as you remove the last screw to prevent it from falling.

    • 7

Remove the doorbell from the wall.

    • 8

Install the new doorbell to the wall using a screwdriver. Tighten the mounting screws clockwise.

    • 9

Pull the marked wires into the new doorbell frame.

    • 10

Connect the wire with the tape marked "S," to the switch terminal and the wire marked "T," to the transformer terminal. Tighten the terminal screw using a screwdriver.

    • 11

Remove the masking tape from the two wires.

    • 12

Install the doorbell cover and tighten the cover screw clockwise.

    • 13

Restore the power to the doorbell and test by depressing the outdoor switch.
