Universal Light Kit Installation Tips for Ceiling Fans

Shed some light into your room by installing a light kit on your ceiling fan. Universal light kits work with most ceiling fans. You will not have to worry about getting the wrong light kit for your fan if you install a universal kit. When installing the light kit, make the job easier by keeping some general tips in mind.
  1. Get Help

    • Before installing the light kit for the ceiling fan, get someone to help you install the fan. The fan and fan blades need to be in place and working before you install the lighting kit. You need a second person to help you to keep the fan blades stable while you install them on the fan. Check that the fan works before you install the universal light kit, so if the fan or light does not work after installation, you will know that the problem occurred during the installation of the light kit and not as an inherent problem with the fan's wiring. During installation of the light kit, a second person in the room can hand you tools you need without you needing to crawl up and down off a ladder. Your assistant also serves as a spotter while you work on a ladder to install the light kit.

    Power

    • Install the ceiling fan with the power to the house turned off at the breaker. Test the installed fan, and turn the breaker off again to install the light kit. Tape the light switch the fan is wired to down to remind you to reset the breaker before testing the fan and light. Tell anyone else in the house you are turning off the power. Shutting off the power to the house is the only way to be certain that you will not accidentally hit a live wire while installing the fan's light kit.

    Wiring

    • When wiring the light kit to the fan, match the color of the wires from the light kit to those in the ceiling fan. Double check the connections between wires by gently tugging on either end of the wires on each side of the wire nut. The wires should not come loose or pull out of the wire nut.

    Testing

    • After installing the light kit into the base of the ceiling fan, screw in a light bulb and turn the power back on at the breaker. Test the light of the ceiling fan before putting the globe around the light kit. If you need to go back and recheck the wiring, you will have less work to do if you do not have to remove the globe and the light kit from the ceiling fan.
