Instructions for Track Lighting Installation in a Sloped Ceiling

Track lighting provides a practical solution for improving illumination in areas beneath a sloped ceiling. The track itself installs in any attitude necessary to optimize lighting. Track lights are modular and move independently along the track to focus light where you want it. Sloped ceilings often use pendant lamps or recessed fixtures for lighting. You can wire track lighting into the existing light circuit and operate it with the existing switch or dimmer controls.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the existing light at the sloped ceiling on.

    • 2

Shut off the power to the light at the house electrical panel by switching the breaker to the "Off" position. This action turns the light off and verifies that the power is off.

    • 3

Remove the old fixture from the ceiling, using a stepladder to reach the light. Most light fixtures are removed using screwdrivers and combination pliers.

    • 4

Remove the wire nuts from the electrical connections by turning them counter-clockwise.

    • 5

Test the wiring with a voltage tester to ensure no power exists. Insert one probe of the tester onto the black hot wire connection and the other onto the white neutral connection. No reading on the tester indicates the power is off.

    • 6

Disconnect the black/white wire from the switch and the white neutral wires of the old light fixture. The power supply wires can remain connected. Lower the fixture to your helper.

    • 7

Insert the black and white wires from the track connector plug through the center hole of the track light cover plate.

    • 8

Connect the black wire from the track connector plug to the black/white switch wire with a wire nut. Tighten the wire nut clockwise by hand.

    • 9

Connect the white wire from the track plug to the white neutral wire from the box with a wire nut.

    • 10

Wrap several turns of electrical tape clockwise around the wire nuts. Overlap the tape from the nut onto the insulation of the wires.

    • 11

Install the cover plate to the ceiling box using the two cover screws. Tighten the screws clockwise with a screwdriver.

    • 12

Insert the plug of the track connector into the open end of the track.

    • 13

Hold the track in the desired position on the ceiling. Mark the ceiling through the mounting holes with a pencil to indicate the positions of the mounting screws.

    • 14

Remove the track from the ceiling and unplug the connector from the end of the track.

    • 15

Drill holes the size the track manufacturer recommends for the necessary toggle bolts at each marked position on the ceiling.

    • 16

Install the toggle bolts though the mounting holes of the track. Turn the bolt end into the wing nut by hand a few turns. With the toggle wings folded, the tips of the wings must be between 1 3/4 to 2 inches from the base of the track.

    • 17

Fold the wings of the toggle bolts and insert them into the hole until you hear and feel the spring-loaded wings extend above the ceiling. Tighten the toggle bolts clockwise using a screwdriver.

    • 18

Plug the track connector into the end of the track. Install the track connector cover over the plug and press in until it snaps into place.

    • 19

Install the track light fixtures onto the track. Align the electrical contact blades parallel to the track. Once you have each in the desired position, rotate the fixture base of the lights 90 degrees to lock it in place.

    • 20

Install bulbs recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 21

Restore power to the light circuit and test the lights.
