How to Change Pool Motor Shaft Seals

The rubber seals within your swimming pool pump's motor prevent the pump from leaking water. Over time, the chemicals in your pool water eat away at these seals -- corroding them and resulting in leaks. Thus, if you notice water leaking from the bottom of your pool pump, the rubber shaft seals within the pump's motor may need to be replaced. Properly replacing the shaft seals ensures that the pump and motor assembly will continue to work properly, saving you from the expense of purchasing a new motor.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the pump. Remove the bolts holding the pump and motor assembly to the pump housing with a nut driver. Pull the pump assembly free from the housing.

    • 2

Pull the diffuser off the end of the pump and motor assembly. Hold the motor shaft steady. Twist the impeller counter-clockwise until it comes free.

    • 3

Unscrew the back cover of the pool pump assembly and remove it. Unscrew and remove the capacitor.

    • 4

Hold the motor shaft steady. Twist the impeller free of the pump side of the assembly with a channel lock wrench. The motor shaft seal is located inside the seal plate beneath the pump impeller.

    • 5

Turn the motor over and stand it on end. Pry the old shaft seal out of the seal plate with a screwdriver.

    • 6

Sit the new shaft seal into the seal plate, ceramic side up. Do not touch the ceramic side of the new shaft seal with your hands.

    • 7

Twist the other shaft seal off the pump impeller. Push the new seal into place, ceramic side up.

    • 8

      Re-assemble the pump motor assembly.
