How to Tighten Up Loose Wiring on a Goodman

The last thing you want to do is come into the house on a hot day and turn on your Goodman air conditioner only to discover that it isn't functioning properly. The wiring on your Goodman system sends electrical signals from the wall thermostat to the main appliance. If your wiring comes loose, this can cause your air conditioner to stop working. Before you call an air-conditioner repairman, tighten your Goodman system's wiring. If a loose wire is the root of the problem, knowing how to tighten the wire connections yourself can save you the cost of hiring a professional to check the system.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the air-conditioning system.

    • 2

Type in the correct key code on the thermostat. Doing so unlocks your thermostat control and wiring panels.

    • 3

Slide back the wiring panel on your Goodman thermostat. The wiring panel contains five wires labeled RH, RC, W, Y and G.

    • 4

Shine a flashlight into the thermostat's wiring panel to get a clear view of the wires. Look for any wires that have exposed copper ends. The copper ends of each wire must be secured beneath the wiring panel's screws. Thus, exposed copper ends indicate a loose wire.

    • 5

Unscrew the corresponding screws for any loose wires with a miniature flathead screwdriver.

    • 6

Push the stripped end of the wire into the wiring receptacle beneath the screw. Hold the wire securely in place with one hand. Screw the corresponding screw back into the receptacle over the wire.

Complete this process for each loose wire on your Goodman heating and cooling system.
