How to Wire an Angle Lamp Holder

The design of a light fixture determines the design of the lamp holder within the fixture -- and the final shape and style of the fixture is what determines the use of an angle lamp holder. Because of the age of the fixture or exposure to moisture, however, the angle lamp holder inside a light fixture can fail. Save money and time by wiring a new lamp holder rather than replacing it. The angle lamp holder comes with pre-installed and pre-stripped wires, making installation a breeze.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker providing electricity to the light fixture. Locate the 15- or 20-amp single-pole breaker for the light fixture inside your main breaker box.

    • 2

Remove the shade covering the light fixture. Depending on the fixture, the cover could secure to the fixture with a decorative cap nut on the fixture's exterior, or with thumb screws.

    • 3

Hold a non-contact voltage sensor next to the black wire connected to the original lamp holder. The sensor won’t light if you have the right breaker turned off.

    • 4

Untwist the connectors holding the black wire from the original angle lamp holder to the black wire inside the fixture. Untwist the connector holding the angle lamp holder’s white wire to the white wire in the fixture.

    • 5

Remove the screw from the angle bracket attached to the top of the lamp holder to release it from the fixture base. Connect the new angle lamp holder to the fixture base with the screw you removed from the original. Ensure the black and white wires lay in the grooves cut into the lamp holder’s porcelain exterior, so the angle holder rests flush against the fixture base.

    • 6

Twist the wire connector you originally removed from the fixture’s black wires onto the black wire from the new angle lamp holder and the fixture's black wire. Do the same with the new angle lamp holder’s white wire and the fixture’s white wire.

Replace the fixture shade, and turn on the circuit breaker.
