How to Install a Wall Drop

The wall drop is the electric wires from the junction box to the outlets or switches in a room. Homeowners can also pass television signal cables or Ethernet cables through the walls to create outlets on the walls for convenience. Fish tape makes pushing the cable through the ceiling and walls simple. These hooked rods are available at home improvement stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan the shortest route from the service box to the end destination for the wall drop.

    • 2

Connect the cable or wire to the service box with enough slack in the line to extend to the destination with at least 12 extra inches of cable to move around obstacles or for future branches.

    • 3

Cut out a hole in the wall with a wallboard saw where you intend to install the cable or electrical outlet.

    • 4

Bend the free end of the cable into a hook and latch it onto the hooked end of the fish tape.

    • 5

Tape the connection between the end of the fish tape and cable with electrical tape to secure it.

    • 6

Push the end of the fish tape across the space from the location of the junction box in the ceiling to the wall where the end point is located.

    • 7

Drop the line down the wall between two studs, and have a partner grab the end of the fish tape when it reaches the hole cut into the wall.

    • 8

Pull the fish tape all the way through the hole and remove the electrical tape from the cable from the opposite end. Connect the end of the cable as needed by installing a cable or electrical outlet box in the hole in the wall.
