How to Install a Globe Under a Cabinet Fixture

Adding lighting to the space below a cabinet fixture will make it easier to see items on a countertop. It could also give the room a decorative touch. Globe lights, which feature light bulbs inside glass or paper spheres, are an option that can complement many styles of decor. Globe lights project light in all directions, making them ideal choices for the spaces below cabinet fixtures. Installing a globe below a cabinet is relatively simple as long as you already have an electrical outlet nearby.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the cabinet. Measure and record the distance between the location for the light and the closest available electrical outlet.

    • 2

Use wire cutters to cut the power cord from the globe light kit so it is the same length as the distance from the installation location to the outlet. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to strip, twist and tape the cord with electrical tape.

    • 3

Drill a three quarter-inch hole in the bottom of the cabinet with an electric drill, drilling upward from the space below the cabinet. Drill additional holes in the cabinet walls, or the bottom of another cabinet section, so there is a clear path for the power cord to reach the outlet.

    • 4

Screw two metal hooks into the base or side walls of the cabinet from the inside. The ideal location will be close to a hole that can accommodate a power cord.

    • 5

Feed the power cord up through the original hole and into the cabinet interior. Screw a hanger into the bottom of the cabinet within a few inches of the hole, if the globe light comes with a hanger and chain. Loop the chain over the hanger. Attach the other end of the chain to the catch on the top of the globe.

    • 6

Wind the power cord around the two metal hooks inside the cabinet to support the weight of the globe. This will prevent the tension from pulling against the power cord where it plugs into the outlet.

    • 7

Route the power cord through any additional holes. Leave the cord unplugged near the outlet.

    • 8

Insert a light bulb into the globe following the supplied installation instructions. Plug in the power cord to test brightness and functionality of the light.
