Fitting a Bathroom Ceiling Heat & Light

One possible option when updating an older bathroom is to add a ceiling light combined with a heating unit. In these type of units, a heating coil is mounted either next to or around the light. When switched on, these produce heat, which can take the chill out of a bathroom on a cold morning. Fitting one of these units can be done with a minimal set of tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Using a pencil, mark a location on the bathroom ceiling where you want to place the heat and light unit. Some light kits may come with templates to assist you in tracing this. If not, measure out the widest part of the lamp unit with measuring tape and transfer these measurements to the ceiling.

    • 2

Turn off the electricity to the existing bathroom fixtures at the main circuit breaker.

    • 3

Use a keyhole or jigsaw to cut around your trace marks on the ceiling.

    • 4

Mount the receptacle socket for the lamp between two joists in the ceiling above the bathroom. These can be secured either by hammering into the joist with a nail or by screwing.

    • 5

Strip off the ends of the black and white wires on the lamp unit with a pair of wire strippers.

    • 6

Insert the heating and lamp unit into the hanging socket, through the bathroom ceiling. Feed the wires through the openings in the side of the socket.

    • 7

Secure the heat and light unit in the hanging socket with the included screws.

    • 8

Tie the heat and light into the nearest junction. Connect the white wire to the white wire in the junction box, the black wire to the corresponding black wire, and the copper wire to the terminal screw in the junction box.

    • 9

Restore the electrical power. Test the heat and light.
