Get a friend to help. This is a two-person job.
Start your measurement 1 inch from the wall connected to the vaulted edge, which allows for the width of the plumb. You need to leave enough space for the plumb to hang freely when you measure to adjust sheetrock for the vaulted ceiling.
Measure out from the end wall to the point you want to start your sheetrock. This is usually the width of the sheetrock. Make a mark.
Drop a plumb line from the place the ceiling meets the sidewall and adjust it until it lines up with the end of the mark you just made. You may need a ladder for this step.
Stand higher on a ladder and drop a plumb line from the peak of the ceiling to the mark on the floor you made for the first plumb line. Adjust the plumb line until it lines up with the mark. Mark the spot on the upper portion of the ceiling.
Connect a chalk line to both marks on the vaulted ceiling and snap a chalk line. The biggest problem when you adjust sheetrock for an out of plumb ceiling is getting a correctly plumbed line. The chalk line you just snapped is just that.
Take measurements at several points along the chalk line to the edge of the end wall. Use these measurements to cut the edge of the sheetrock for the side edge. Line up the inner edge of the sheetrock with the chalk line. Once you adjust the first sheet of sheetrock, the rest remain plumb. At the far side, you have to cut the edge for any deviation.
