How to Install Green Board on a Bathroom Ceiling

Measure the square footage of the green board to be installed. Have a helper hold one end of the tape measure while you pull the other. Measure the width and the length of the ceiling from wall to wall.

Determine the amount of green board to be purchased . Green board comes in sheets of 4 feet by 8 feet. One sheet of green board is 32 square feet. Divide the total square feet of the ceiling by the square footage of one sheet of green board. For example, if you had a ceiling that was 8 feet by 8 feet, you would multiply 8 by 8 and divide that by 32. So, 64 square feet divided by 32 is 2. It will take 2 boards to cover the ceiling.

Hang the first sheet with the ceiling joists running perpendicular to the green board. Place a bead of construction adhesive along the ceiling joists before you hang the board. Place the board with the green surface facing down. Have a helper hold the board in place while you insert the drywall screws 24 inches apart down the length of the board and every 12 inches from side to side. Repeat until all green board has been installed.

Spread a thin coat of drywall mud into the joints of the green board and apply the finishing tape. The tape is paper and will come in a roll. Tear off the amount you need. Press the tape into the mud and smooth out with the mud knife. Allow this layer to dry for 24 hours.

Apply a second layer of mud about 8 inches wide and allow to dry for 24 hours, and then apply a third layer that is 12 inches wide. After the last layer has dried for 24 hours, sand the joint smooth, prime the green board, and paint.
