The Best Way to Cut Crown Molding

Crown molding can add value and a distinctive look to your home. Putting up crown molding is a two-person job, but one person can cut it. Although there are several ways to cut crown molding, one proven way will leave the cleanest edge that provides the best corner.

  • Power miter saw

      Measure the length of the run where you're putting the crown molding, using a measuring tape. Measure both runs because it is a corner. The point at which the molding meets must be accurate.

      Mark the molding where you'll make the cut. Hold the molding toward you in the exact way it will be nailed into the ceiling. Turn the molding over. Use the backboard of the miter saw to act as the wall and the floor of the saw as the ceiling.

      Set the miter saw to 45 degrees. Start on the right side. Cut the molding. For the next cut, simply shift the blade to the left side of the saw and cut the other section. This will give you an outside corner. If it is a little rough, smooth it with 100-grit sandpaper.
