How to Add Attic Insulation to an Old House

Insulation is a material that is applied in a structure such as a home to help reduce the amount of heat loss or gain. There are two types of insulation--bulk insulation and reflective insulation. Most buildings use a combination of both types. Loose-fill bulk insulation is commonly used in attics. Bulk insulation blocks the heat transfer, and radiant insulation reflects the heat. Attic insulation can help reduce overall heating and cooling costs in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Rent an insulation blower from your local home repair store.

    • 2

Place plywood planks over the floor planks in the attic in your home so you can move about freely without falling through the ceiling.

    • 3

Seal all air leaks that occur from your attic to the inside of the home. Use caulk for small leaks and plywood or expanding foam for larger holes.

    • 4

Repair any leaks in your roof, which can cause wet insulation and damage your home. Replace any rotten plywood and replace any damaged roof shingles.

    • 5

Remove any items that you have stored inside your attic.

    • 6

Place attic rulers throughout the attic so you will know when you have achieved the correct insulation height.

    • 7

Load the insulation into the blower. Keep the blower full of insulation so the application is smooth and even.

    • 8

Hold the hose parallel to the floor and move it slowly to the right and the left. The insulation will blow 10 to 12 feet in front of you, so you can stand back a bit for the application. Continue loading the blower until the entire attic is covered with insulation.
