How Do I Insulate an Attic Using Reflective Insulation?

Reflective insulation is more effective than regular fiberglass insulation and requires a minimal amount of work to install. It has a higher R value (amount of insulation properties) than fiberglass and can actually be placed over traditional fiberglass insulation. It is made with a combination of air and reflective materials.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Shrub trimmers (To cut the insulation)
  • Reflective insulation (Amount depends on your attic)

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the attic to determine how many reflective tiles you will need.

    • 2

Remove any floorboards to give complete access to the attic joists. Some may have to be unscrewed, but commonly they are placed on top of the floor boards.

    • 3

Place the tiles in the gaps between the ceiling joists. If one needs to be cut use the garden shears to cut the material. It will give a cleaner cut than any other cutting device.

    • 4

Replace all of the attic flooring. You can screw it down if you wish, but it is not necessary.
