Can a Popcorn Ceiling Show a Water-Type Stain in an Area With No Plumbing Nearby?

You have a popcorn ceiling with what appears to be a water-type stain, yet no plumbing is anywhere near that section of the ceiling. This can be explained.
  1. Effects

    • Keep in mind that rainwater may also be a source of water-type stains. If your popcorn ceiling is directly under the roof, and the roof is leaky, rainwater could be settling onto the popcorn ceiling anywhere, either directly under the leak, or at a place where the water is settling.

    Considerations

    • Keep in mind that water flows, sometimes quite some distance from the source of the water itself. If water is getting into a house from any location, such as a leaky pipe or roof, it may flow to any lower location, and collect there, perhaps dozens of feet from the source of the leak.

    Possibilities

    • In an apartment house, if a tenant above you has left the water running to flood out of a sink or a tub, or if an apartment above has leaky plumbing, that water could be collecting on your popcorn ceiling.
