How to Extend the Length of Wires in a Ceiling Fan Installation

A ceiling fan is typically connected to an electrical junction box that is inside the ceiling, so the fan's electric wires are usually short. To attach a ceiling fan to any location on a ceiling, extend the electric wires so that they can be pulled through the ceiling to where a junction box is located. There are two methods to use to accomplish this, depending on the length of the extension wire that is going to be used.

Things You'll Need

  • Ruler
  • Wire strippers
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire nuts
  • 16-gauge electrical wire
  • Compression sleeves
  • Pliers/crimping tool

Instructions

  1. Wire Nut Wiring

    • 1

Strip 1 inch of insulation from the end of one of the electric wires connected to the ceiling fan, using wire strippers. Twist the exposed end of the wire between your fingers to form a rod.

    • 2

Cut 1/4 inch off the ends of the rod with wire cutters. Place a wire nut over the exposed end of the wire.

    • 3

Repeat this procedure of cutting and twisting a wire with one of the wires from the extension wire. Twist the rod from the extension electric wire around the rod from the wire attached to the ceiling fan.

    • 4

Screw the wire nut onto the two rods until it is finger-tight.

    • 5

Repeat the entire procedure with the other wire from the extension electric wire and the other wire from the ceiling fan.

    Compression Sleeve Wiring

    • 6

Strip 1 inch of insulation from the end of one of the electric wires connected to the ceiling fan, using a wire stripper. Twist the exposed end of the wire between your fingers to form a rod.

    • 7

Cut 1/2 inch off the ends of the rod with a wire cutter.

    • 8

Repeat this procedure of cutting and twisting a wire with one of the wires from the extension electric wire.

    • 9

Place a compression sleeve over the wire attached to the ceiling fan. Twist the rod from the ceiling fan and from the electric wire around each other. Screw the compression sleeve onto the two rods with a clockwise motion.

    • 10

Keep screwing the compression sleeve on the rods until it is finger-tight. Crimp the compression sleeve with the jaws of a pliers or a crimping tool.

    • 11

Repeat the entire procedure with the other wire from the extension electric wire and the other wire from the ceiling fan.
