Acoustic tile ceilings were popular from the 1960s to the 1980s due to their ability to deaden echoing sounds in a room. Acoustic tile ceilings were also easier to install and remove than drywall or plaster ceilings. Today, acoustic tile ceilings are found mostly in office buildings. The tiles sit freely within a drop ceiling framework. If one tile gets damaged or stained, you can remove and replace it without having to replace or repaint the entire ceiling.
