How Do I Replace a Ceiling Fan Unit With a Heat Lamp?

A ceiling fan circulates air but does not heat it the way a heat lamp can. You can replace a ceiling fan in a bathroom, for example, with a heat lamp so that you generate heat on command. You will need a light fixture, on sale at a hardware store, and household tools. Those that the home does not already have are also on sale at the hardware store. You will need a basic understanding of how electricity works to swap the components safely.

Things You'll Need

  • Duct tape
  • Ladder
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Light fixture
  • Ruler
  • Wire strippers
  • Light fixture mounting plate
  • Wood screws
  • Screw-tab connectors
  • Metal screws

Instructions

    • 1

Trip the circuit breaker at the fuse box to turn off the electricity going to the room where the ceiling fan is.Tape the fuse box door closed with strips of duct tape to make the fuse box "off-limits" until you are done with the installation.

    • 2

Flip the switch that controls the ceiling fan on to confirm that there is no power. Flip the switch back to the "Off" position. Place a ladder beneath the ceiling fan. Unscrew any bulbs attached to the ceiling fan and place them aside -- if the ceiling fan doesn't have a light fixture attached to it, ignore this step.

    • 3

Remove the screws from around the base of the ceiling fan with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the fan away from the ceiling. Twist the screw-tab connectors that are on the twisted pairs of wires, which can now be seen, counterclockwise. Continue twisting the connectors until they come off the wires. Unwind the wires from each other. Place the ceiling fan aside.

    • 4

Remove the screws from the ceiling fan's mounting plate that is on the ceiling using the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the plate off the ceiling and place it aside.

    • 5

Place the light fixture on a work surface with the bottom facing up. Strip a 1/2 inch of insulation off the ends of each of the wires attached to the bottom of the fixture using wire strippers.

    • 6

Run the wires from the hole in the ceiling through the center of the light fixture mounting plate. Place the plate against the celling, over the hole. Screw wood screws through the pre-drilled holes in the plate and into the ceiling using the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 7

Wind the end of the black wire from the light fixture around the black wire from the hole. Repeat this step with the white wire from the fixture and the white wire from the hold. Repeat this step with the green wire from the fixture and the bare, or copper-colored, wire from the hole.

    • 8

Twist a screw-tab connector over each pair of twisted wires. Continue screwing the connectors over the wires until the resistance is too great to continue.

    • 9

Place the light fixture against the plate. Screw metal screws through the pre-drilled holes in the fixture and into the pre-drilled holes in the plate -- use the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 10

Screw a heat lamp into the bulb socket. Place the ladder away and restore the electrical power; first remove the strips of duct tape from the fuse box door. Flip the switch to turn on the heat lamp.
