How to Make a Steam Bath

An invigorating steam bath is relaxing and therapeutic but sometimes you simply don't have the time or money to spend at a day spa or resort. Fortunately you can recreate the steam bath experience in your own home. This allows you to experience a soothing steam bath without committing to a vacation or chunk of your income.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a home-use humidifier and place it in your bathroom on a counter where it is safe from water splashes. These humidifiers are compact and can be purchased at department and drug stores. Fill the humidifier with water as per the instructions.

    • 2

Fill a large metal bowl with ice cubes or crushed ice. Take it into your bathroom with a wash rag and stack of four or more towels.

    • 3

Turn the humidifier to its highest setting.

    • 4

Seal yourself into the bathroom by pressing masking tape up along the cracks of the closed door. Do this with any windows in the bathroom as well. Roll up a towel and push it under the door to keep air from escaping or coming into the bathroom.

    • 5

Turn on your bathroom sink on the hot water only and don't plug the stopper in it. Let the water run. Roll up the remaining towels to make a padded area in your shower or bathtub in which to relax. The humidifier and sink will fill the room with an adequate amount of steam for a steam bath.

Scoop a ladle full of ice into the sink beneath the running hot water. When the ice meets the scalding water, it will create billowy clouds of steam throughout the room. Dabbing your body with a washcloth that has been soaked in the bowl of gradually melting ice water adds invigorating sensations to your skin while enjoying the steam bath.
