Water Leak in the Ceiling

Peeling paint and a stain on the ceiling are usually the first signs of a water leak. The damage may appear small at first, but if the source of the problem is not fixed, the damage is likely to spread.
  1. Causes

    • Water leaks may be caused by condensation, melting frost, roof problems, a defect in water pipes or a plumbing problem in a room above the ceiling. If the source is not evident, check your water meter when all faucets are shut off. If the meter moves, it might indicate the source is a pipe leak.

    Repair

    • To prevent future water leaks, the source of the leak must be repaired. A plumber can help if the source is a bad seal on a plumbing fixture, whereas you might call a roofer if water has leaked under the shingles. Insulation in the ceiling or attic might also need to be replaced.

    Patching

    • You can fix the damage on the ceiling yourself or hire a professional to do it. The peeling paint and damaged drywall will need to be removed and patched with a product such as joint compound. After the compound dries, the area can be textured and painted.
