How to Cover a Stain on a Ceiling

A stain on your ceiling can be unsightly. Stains can come from a number of sources including cigarette smoke, water or the removal of a fixture. If the stain is from a leak, make sure you fix the source of the leak before you cover up the stain; otherwise, the stain will return.

Things You'll Need

  • Drop cloth
  • Ladder
  • Broom
  • Stain-block primer
  • Paint tray
  • Telescoping roller
  • Ceiling paint

      Lay a drop cloth on the floor and move any furniture away from the area you will be painting.

      Use a broom and a ladder to remove any cobwebs, dust or dirt from the ceiling.

      Pour a stain-block primer into a paint tray and use a telescoping roller to cover the stain. Paint at least 4 inches beyond the stain. Let the primer dry according to the manufacturer's directions. If needed, apply a second coat of primer.

      Rinse and dry the paint try and roller.

      Pour ceiling paint into the paint tray in a color that matches the surrounding ceiling color.

      Roll the paint onto the stain and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's directions. If needed, apply a second coat of paint.
