Spray water generously along the cracked seam area. Let the water soak into the textured plaster for a few minutes to soften it for easier removal.
Put on safety goggles then remove the popcorn, or "acoustic," texture down to the drywall paper by scraping along the cracked surface with a putty knife. If the drywall is indeed cracked, take off a 3-inch wide strip along both sides of the entire seam. If just the popcorn surface is cracked, apply a coat of primer, let it dry then proceed with the texture repair kit as instructed on the product label.
Cut the tip off the nozzle of a tube of caulking with a utility knife then put the tube in a caulking gun.
Squeeze the trigger on the caulking gun to release a flow of caulking into the crack. Wipe any excess caulking from the drywall surface by sliding the back of a plastic spoon or your finger over it. Allow the caulking to dry for the length of time indicated on the tube. The caulking is flexible compared to the cracked drywall mud; therefore the crack should not split open in the future.
Paint a coat of primer over the caulking and scraped area. Allow it to dry.
Coat the repaired surface with acoustic aerosol-spray texture, following the instructions on the texture repair kit. These kits are available in various textures from most hardware or building supply stores.
