How to Redo Your Ceiling

Though redoing a ceiling isn't a difficult project, it will take a bit of planning. You might wish to tear down old popcorn ceilings and simply fasten drywall to the rafters. Or you can choose to repaint your ceiling a different color to update the space. Yet another option is to add texture to a plain ceiling, giving it your own personal custom look. Each is fairly straightforward and can be done over a weekend.

Instructions

  1. Replace the Ceiling with Drywall

    • 1

Pull down the old ceiling with a hammer and pry bar, exposing the roof trusses.

    • 2

Attach drywall sheets to the roof beams with drywall screws, then tape the joints with drywall tape.

    • 3

Spread joint compound over the tape with a drywall knife and let dry. Then sand smooth with sandpaper.

    • 4

Paint your new ceiling with a color of your choosing using a roller to finish redoing your ceiling.

    Repaint Your Ceiling

    • 5

Spread drop cloths over the floor to keep paint from dripping onto the flooring.

    • 6

Fill a paint tray with a paint of your choosing, then paint the ceiling with a roller and let dry for two to three hours.

    • 7

Apply a second coat of paint to your ceiling using the roller and allow to dry completely. Paint on a third coat if the color is not dark enough to your liking.

    Texture Your Ceiling

    • 8

Apply a coat of ceiling texture vertical spray to the ceiling.

    • 9

Texture your ceiling by brushing and pressing a cynthetic stipple brush, creating different swirls and impressions while the ceiling texture vertical spray is still wet.

    • 10

Let the ceiling texture vertical spray once you have textured it for at least two to three hours. Then, apply another coat of ceiling texture vertical spray and use the cynthetic stipple brush again if more texture is needed.
