How to Fix a Sheetrock Wall That Separates From the Ceiling

Drywall is the most common material used for walls and ceilings in residential construction. One of the areas that's most likely to need repair is between the walls and ceilings. Settling of the home or mistakes during construction can cause these joints to separate, leaving an ugly crack. In many cases you can repair the cracks and make your walls and ceiling look as good as new.

Instructions

    • 1

Move any furniture or draperies that are underneath the area where you'll be working. Place a drop cloth below and position your ladder so you can reach the crack.

    • 2

Insert a utility knife into the crack and widen the crack to about 1/8-inch. Use the utility knife to remove any bits of drywall or other debris from the cracks.

    • 3

Apply joint compound the the crack with a taping knife, pushing joint compound into the crack and then feathering out the remainder to make a smooth transition between the crack and the wall. Let the compound dry thoroughly.

    • 4

Sand the patched area with fine sandpaper until it is smooth to the touch, and even with the rest of the ceiling and wall. This process can create a lot of dust -- you may want to wear a dust mask.

    • 5

Wipe down the area you've been working on, and the wall below, with a damp sponge to remove any excess dust. Paint the area to match your surrounding ceilings and walls.
