How to Hide a Ceiling Crack With Molding

Cracks can develop in the ceiling around light fixtures, especially if they get hit or pulled. Decorative molding on the ceiling can cover all kinds of cosmetic ceiling cracks that occur near a light fixture. Ceiling medallions, shaped decorative pieces of molding made of wood, polyurethane or plaster, can be mounted around the light fixture to hide any unsightly cracks for good. Besides covering ceiling cracks, a two-piece ceiling medallion can add a touch of elegance to the room.

Things You'll Need

  • Two-piece ceiling medallion, primed and painted
  • Stepladder
  • Screwdriver
  • Polyurethane adhesive
  • Coated screws from medallion kit (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the breaker box and turn off all the power to the room you are working in.

    • 2

Set up the stepladder right under the light fixture. Remove the fixture plate and locate the mounting bracket for the light fixture.

    • 3

Adjust the screws on the mounting bracket so that there is an increase of space between the fixture and the ceiling. Measure the thickness of the ceiling medallion for a good estimate.

    • 4

Hold one piece of the ceiling medallion up to the mounting bracket for a dry fit. Confirm that the medallion will fit between the fixture and the ceiling. Orient it so that it covers the crack in the ceiling. Make marks on the ceiling to indicate orientation, if the medallion is not circular. Set the medallion piece aside.

    • 5

Spread a ceramic tile polyurethane adhesive on the flat side of one medallion piece. Align the medallion with the ceiling marks and press it firmly onto the ceiling. Line it up with the marks as necessary. Repeat with the second piece.

    • 6

Screw in any coated screws that came with the ceiling medallion kit. Some kits come with screws and countersunk holes already in the medallion. Smaller ceiling medallions only need adhesive, but large ones may need the extra support of the screws. Follow the manufacturer's advice on whether or not to use the screws.

    • 7

Apply spackling compound to the seams of the medallion and smooth it out so the joint is not visible. Touch up the seams with paint to completely conceal them.

    • 8

Slide the fixture plate in place and screw it back in. Apply white painter's caulk to fill the seams between the ceiling medallion and the ceiling.

    • 9

Restore the light fixture plate to its proper place and allow the entire thing to dry for at least 24 hours without bumping or touching it.
