Remove some joint compound and put it in a separate container. Work in small amounts, about 2 cups at a time.
Add some fine silica sand to the compound and mix thoroughly. Continue adding more silica until the texture resembles the texture on the ceiling. Mix is a little water to thin the compound if it gets too difficult to work with. It should be the consistency of heavy pancake batter.
Patch the ceiling crack or hole using the joint compound on a trowel or putty knife.
Mix water and joint compound in a separate container until it is liquid and soup-like.
Layer the mixture onto the ceiling to cover the original patch in Section 1 using a paintbrush or roller until it blends in with the ceiling. Apply more compound than necessary because you will finish it after it dries.
Allow the compound to dry for about eight hours or as recommended by the manufacturer.
Scrub the patch with a nylon scrubber and sponge until it blends in with the rest of the surface.
