Instructions

  1. Gather Information

    • 1
Measure the new oven space carefully before you buy appliances.

Decide which wall of your kitchen would best suit your needs for a double oven installation. The space must be a minimum of 27 inches wide and 24 inches in depth, with six feet of unobstructed wall in height. Check to make sure that there is room for the oven doors to swing open without hitting anything.

    • 2
Manufacturer specifications will list dimensions for your new ovens.

Check the specifications for available ovens, using your measurements as a guide to appropriate sizes. Add an additional 3 inches to the width of the oven for the cabinet. For example, a 27-inch oven requires a 30-inch-wide space.

    • 3
Read the ovens' specifications carefully before you buy.

Purchase the ovens and read the installation instructions carefully. Read the specifications from the manufacturer about the recommended cabinet height, width and depth for that oven pair.

    • 4
Draw a plan before you begin installation.

Draw out the plan for the oven installation, including all measurements for each piece of the cabinet. Measure from the floor to the ceiling to determine the final height of the full-length cabinet. Plan a finished height of 4 inches for a toe kick platform and a finished cabinet side measurement of 96 inches to the ceiling, assuming 8-foot ceilings.

    • 5
Install the gas and electric lines needed for the ovens.

Install the necessary electrical and gas lines in the wall where the ovens are to be located. Install all wiring and circuits according to the specifications. Add circuit breakers to the main box if necessary.

    • 6
      Traditional face frame cabinets

Plan to build a traditional face frame cabinet for the double oven. Cut-out sizes for the appliance will be listed on the installation instructions. Build custom cabinets to install the ovens when standard height pre-manufactured cabinets will not suit your design needs.

    • 7
Customize your cabinet to your height.

Determine the height of the bottom of the lower oven by measuring up from the floor. Measure a toe kick height of 4 inches and between 12 and 15 inches for the drawer or door below the ovens. Take the opportunity to customize the cabinet to a height that is comfortable for your needs.

    Build and Assemble your Cabinet

    • 8
Build the cabinets using sturdy materials that can withstand the ovens' weight.

Build full-height cabinets in place because it is difficult to tilt them into place when they are fully assembled. Pre-cut all of the cabinet pieces, including the toe kick and all center shelving. Use finished plywood that's at least 3/4 inch thick, or laminate covered manufactured wood that's 5/8 inch or thicker for the upright sections of the cabinet. Make the shelving for the ovens out of 5/8 inch plywood to handle the oven weight. Some ovens weigh 360 to 400 pounds in combined weight.

Assemble the toe kick and attach it securely to the floor. Install the floor of the cabinet, then attach the sides and the top. Mark the center shelf between the cabinets and install heavy load-bearing supports or cleats. Install the lower oven shelf on the supports. Use wood glue and wood screws in pre-drilled pilot holes to attach all of the cabinet pieces together.

    • 10
Add a top vent if necessary.

Drill through the top of the cabinet and the ceiling to add venting for the ovens by using a wood drill bit and finishing the cutout with a jig saw. Check the installation instructions, because modern ovens often vent back into the kitchen and do not require additional top vents.

    • 11

Install the oven and screw in the appliance brackets from the installation kit to securely hold the ovens into the cabinet. Add face frame moldings and trim pieces.
