How to Repair Stretched Carpet After Steam Cleaning

No one expects their carpet to suddenly pull up form the floor like wrinkled skin, but steam cleaning a carpet sometimes causes this phenomenon. Heat from the steam may stretch the carpet or cause the seams of the carpet to come loose, leaving gaps between carpet pieces. To repair the damage, you have to stretch the carpet across the room again. Specialized rental tools are required, and you should leave yourself nearly an entire day to accomplish the task.

Instructions

    • 1

Peel back the carpet at the corner of the room to expose the carpet pad underneath. Remove the damaged carpet from the room.

    • 2

Pull out all the staples from the padding underneath to prevent the padding from ripping. Remove the old padding from the floor.

    • 3

Remove the tack board from the floor in the area of the damaged carpet by sticking a pry bar underneath and prying the board up and off. Lightly tap the pry bar with a hammer if necessary. Cut new tacks to the length of the old tacks. Space the new tack board and hold it down with the pry bar. Nail them into the floor.

Roll out the new padding along the room. Cut the padding at the corners so that it rests flat on the floor. Cut the excess padding using a utility knife. Staple the padding down using a stapling gun.

Roll out the carpet. Mark the carpet with a utility knife for areas such as corners and cut the excess carpet away, leave 3 inches of excess material along each side of the carpet.

Use the power stretcher to stretch the length of the carpet starting from the end of the room to the opposite end, Go down the middle of the room then make three more lengths with the power stretcher to the left of the first stretch. Do the same to the right. Stick the carpet down at the end of the room to the tack board.
