How to Make a Shop Dust Collector

Sanding wood, either by hand or with a sander, can create a lot of airborne sawdust. This sawdust can be irritating to the respiratory system. In the case of some hardwoods, the sawdust created can cause serious health issues. Wearing a dust mask and working in a well-ventilated space can help, but a simple shop dust collector also can significantly reduce the amount of airborne sawdust.

Things You'll Need

  • 20-inch box fan
  • 20-by-20-inch hypoallergenic furnace filter
  • 20-by-20-inch general purpose furnace filter
  • Duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Place the box fan face-down on a work table. The rear of the fan, with the cord protruding from the motor, should face upward.

    • 2

Center the hypoallergenic filter onto the rear of the fan, with the direction arrow pointing toward the fan.

    • 3

Place the general purpose filter over the hypoallergenic filter, with the direction indicator of the general purpose filter also pointing toward the fan.

    • 4

Tape the filters together, around the perimeter of the two filters. Once all four edges are sealed, tape the two filters onto the fan. There should be no gaps between the edges of the filters or the fan, which will force all air to flow through the filters.

    • 5

Position the box fan near the sanding work space, with the filters facing the work area. Turn the fan on high, and proceed with sanding. A considerable amount of the airborne sawdust is captured in the filters.
