How to Adjust a Table Saw Fence

The table saw fence, also called the rip fence, holds the wooden work piece in line with the circular saw blade for accurate and safe cutting. While the rip fence is held at both ends by a metal round rail, it can get out of alignment. When the fence is out of alignment, the work piece can get wedged between the circular saw blade and the fence. Check the fence for proper distance adjustment before cutting any material on the table saw.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the electrical power to the table saw.

    • 2

Loosen the fence-holding lever to move the rip fence back and forth across the table saw surface. Roughly set the distance between the fence and the saw blade using the on-board measuring tape. The on-board measuring tape device is attached to the rear fence rail.

    • 3

Measure the distance between the fence and the inside of the circular saw blade using the hand-held tape measure. Begin at the front of the saw blade. Set the end of the tape against the fence. Read the distance.

    • 4

Move the tape to the rear of the blade. Set the end of the tape against the fence and read the distance between the inside edge of the saw blade and the fence. Adjust the fence slightly until the two measurements are exact, at least within 1/16 of an inch or better.
