Hand Lifting Tools

Lifting heavy items by hand can cause severe trauma to your back muscles if done improperly. While most people understand the basic steps to properly lift an item, they don't always remember to do it. Several common tools and items can help people lift items properly, and they aren't just for movers and construction workers.
  1. Work Gloves

    • Heavy objects have the tendency to dig into your hands. This can cause scratches, cuts, blisters or bruises that will prevent you from being able to continue lifting. Work gloves prevent you from cutting or bruising your hands on particularly heavy items. Wear work gloves that are comfortable and will not slip from your hands as you are carrying something. Make sure they aren't too tight, as tight gloves may constrict proper blood flow.

    Back Support Belts

    • Back support belts provide extra support to your lower back and abdomen while you are lifting. This helps prevent you from pulling a muscle by stabilizing your spine and holding your muscles in tight. The belts contain hard plastic webbing that also helps support back muscles. Choose a support belt that is comfortable and that isn't too tight, as this may prevent you from breathing properly. Pick a belt that is fully washable and shrink resistant. Be aware that back belts cannot completely protect you from injuries. Always practice safe lifting techniques.

    Work Boots

    • Never lift heavy objects while wearing sandals, flip flops or any other open toed shoes. While you can lift heavy objects in sneakers or canvas shoes, opt for wearing work boots if possible. Work boots are generally thicker and harder and have the ability to absorb impact more than canvas shoes. This will prevent you from breaking or injuring your foot if you drop a heavy object on it. Purchase steel-toed shoes if you lift items by hand on a regular basis. Work shoes also typically go up the ankle, which will prevent you from rolling your ankle when transporting a heavy item.
