Cut the dowel into eight 4-inch-long pieces using the jigsaw. These will serve as the pegs at the bottom of the craft storage unit.
Create the support for the horizontal shelves within the storage unit. Lay both of the 9-inch-long pieces of wood on your worktable so the 8-inch side is the height of the wood and the 9-inch side is the length. Use the ruler and pencil to mark on the wood 2 inches from the top and 1 inch from the left side. Mark three more additional points across the length of the wood that are 1 inch apart so you have a total of four points. Drill four 5/8-inch holes into both pieces of wood at the points you marked.
Use the ruler and draw a line from the top left corner of the wood down to the left side of the first hole you drilled. Then measure 5/8ths of an inch from the top corner and, at that point, draw a line down to the right side of the first hole you drilled. Draw similar lines, at the same angle, for each of the holes you drilled. Use a jigsaw to cut along the lines you drew so you have 5/8-inch spaces in the wood.
Construct the sides and supports of the storage unit. Join the two pieces of 35 1/4-inch-long lumber and one 32-inch-long piece by placing a bead of wood glue along the 1-by-8-inch sides of the shorter piece of wood. Then, lay the short piece of wood flat on the table and line up the two 35 1/4-inch pieces of wood on either side of the shorter piece of wood. The 8-inch widths of the longer pieces of wood should face each other and touch the sides of the shorter piece of wood that has glue on it . Make sure the ends of the three pieces of wood are flush at the bottom ends of the longer piece of wood. Use the nail gun to secure the pieces together.
Use the other 32-inch piece of wood to create the support for the top of the shelf. Affix this piece, using glue and nails, to the ends of the 35 1/4-inch pieces of wood that do not already have an attached support.
Place the predrilled and cut supports for the horizontal shelves along the inside walls of the craft storage unit so their back ends -- the cut sides -- sit on top of the piece of wood providing the back support. Use wood glue and nails to secure the pieces of wood together.
Affix the two 7 1/2-inch-long pieces of wood on top of the supports for the horizontal shelves. Secure these pieces with wood glue and nails.
Install the middle and top shelves. Glue and nail the middle shelf directly above the dividers you just installed. The middle shelf is the 1-by-2 piece of wood that is 24 inches long. Use the other 1-by-2-by-24 piece of wood as the top shelf and install it 8 inches above the middle shelf, using wood glue and nails.
Slide the four 1-by-8-by-32-inch pieces of wood into the horizontal shelf supports.
Drill eight 1/2-inch holes along the back support of the storage unit. Then, place wood glue around one end of each dowel and insert them into the holes you just drilled to form pegs.
Fill the nail holes with wood putty. Sand the putty so it is flush with the wood once it is dry.
Paint the craft storage unit.
