How to Cut 4-Inch Foam Panels

The uses for foam panels stretch far and wide; they can be used as a sound insulator, a sizing template and a protective covering. Despite its flexibility, cutting foam panels to shape is not so easy. Depending upon its thickness, foam panels can be cut with a retractable knife or a bandsaw.

Instructions

    • 1

Using your ruler and pencil, measure and mark with clear pencil lines 4-inch strips on the foam panel. Draw a line to indicate the edge of each 4-inch strip.

    • 2

If you are using a thick piece of foam panel (thicker than a 1/2 inch), a bandsaw is required. If your foam panel is thin, you will only need a retractable knife.

    • 3

When using a bandsaw, line up the pencil line of where you marked the edge of the 4-inch strip to the cutter. Switch the bandsaw on.

    • 4

Keep both hands a considerable distance away from the blade but have a hand on either side of the area you are cutting. Slowly guide the foam panel through the blade without letting go.

    • 5

Cut the foam panel until the edge of the panel. When you have completed your cut, switch the bandsaw off.

    • 6

If using a thin piece of foam board, place the foam board on top of a rubber mat. Line the metal ruler up against the marked line of where the 4-inch strip edge is.

    • 7

Using the retractable knife, cut the foam panel by dragging the knife against the edge of the metal ruler. Ensure that the knife is cutting through the entire thickness of the foam panel and into the rubber mat.
