What Makes Screws Rust?

Rust is the reddish-brown discoloration, crumbling and weakening that happens when oxygen comes into contact with certain metals in wet or moist environments. It is also called oxidation.
  1. Rust

    • The combination of oxygen and metal at an atomic level causes acids that gradually eat away at the metal. The addition of sodium, as in seawater, causes the process of corrosion to occur much more quickly.

    Items that rust

    • The thinner a piece of metal, the greater the likelihood that it will succumb to rust. Screws, nails and bolts are vulnerable to rust.

    Rust proofing

    • Rust proof screws can be purchased. They are made of stainless steel, with a coating of galvanized zinc, which does not rust. Also rust proof paints and primers such as Zin-Kote 601 or Rustbuster can be purchased.
