How to Anchor New Walls to a Concrete Floor

To form a strong, sturdy wall, you must anchor it at both the top and bottom. When framing the wall with both a wood floor and ceiling structural members, this task is fairly straightforward--nail the wall to both the floor and ceiling. However, if you are building walls in a basement or other location with a concrete floor, you must anchor the bottom plate of the wall to the concrete. This will require a slightly different anchoring method.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark out the edge of your wall on the concrete floor.

    • 2

Drill a 1/4-inch hole through the bottom plate of the wall.

    • 3

Place your hammer drill bit into the hole you drilled in the wood. Drill into the concrete until you are 1/2-inch deeper than the length of your concrete anchor.

    • 4

Clear out the hole by plunging the hammer drill bit in and out of the hole several times.

    • 5

Align the edge of the wall with the line you drew in Step 1. Hammer your split-drive anchor into the hole until it is flush with the top of the wood plate.

    • 6

Continue to add additional anchors until the entire floor plate is anchored sufficiently. A properly anchored floor plate will not budge when pressure is applied to the wall.
