How to Install Wall Anchors in Sheetrock

Wall anchors are used to securely fasten pictures and other wall hangings in places where a wall stud is not available. The anchors are made of plastic or metal and are sized to the screws being used. The installation of wall anchors requires that holes be drilled into the wall. The anchors are inserted into the holes in the wall and provide a more secure place to fasten the screws into than Sheetrock alone. This activity requires about 15 minutes to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase wall anchors that are the correct size for the screws being used.

    • 2

Identify where you want the item to be hung on the wall. Make a mark in the spot with a pencil.

    • 3

Measure the distance between the fasteners on the item being hung with a tape measure.

    • 4

Mark the wall with a second mark the same distance as the distance between the item's fasteners. Use a level to ensure that any subsequent locations are even with the first one.

    • 5

Drill holes in the Sheetrock using an electric drill with a drill bit that is no bigger than the diameter of the wall anchors. Hold the drill at a 90 degree angle to the wall so that the holes are drilled perpendicularly into the Sheetrock.

    • 6

Insert the wall anchors into the holes in the Sheetrock.

    • 7

Tap the wall anchors gently with a hammer until the top of the wall anchors are flush with the surface of the Sheetrock and they fit tightly into the holes. The wall anchors should not protrude past the surface of the wall or they may interfere with the appearance of the item hung.
