How to Build a Wood Dressing Room

A dressing room is a necessity for couples who work different schedules and do not want to disturb each other's sleep as they dress or undress at odd hours. It is a luxury for a spouse who needs privacy along with a mirror, closet, dressing bench and fully stocked, well-lighted dressing/make-up table. Building a wood dressing room is simpler if an 8-by-8-foot space is already available in an existing room or large walk-in closet.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a space in an existing room that can accommodate a wood dressing room that is a minimum of 6 by 8 feet and is located as near as possible to electrical outlets. A carpeted floor along with a window that provides natural lighting are extra bonuses.

    • 2

Design the layout of the wood dressing room. Space is needed for an open closet, dressing table, full-length mirror and dressing bench with storage drawers.

    • 3

Measure and mark with masking tape the dimensions of the wood dressing room on the existing floor. Make certain the resulting lines are equidistant from and in line with the existing walls.

    • 4

Build a wood frame by laying down 2-by-4 boards on the floor as necessary to enclose the room. Leave a space in one wall for access; if a door is necessary, leave room to install a door 80 inches tall by 30 inches wide. Attach the 2-by-4 boards to the floor by hammering in 3-inch stainless steel nails every 2 feet.

    • 5

Use a tape measure to mark on the existing walls the placement of 2-by-4 boards at the end of, and resting on, the floor boards. Make certain before you attach the floor boards that there are studs behind the wall to attach the new frame-boards to. Use a carpenter's level to make certain the marks are straight and in plumb. Attach the new frame-boards through the wall and into the existing studs with 3-inch stainless steel nails every 2 feet.

    • 6

Position 2-by-4 frame-boards along the ceiling, making sure that the measurements are the same as was used on the boards on the floor and positioned directly above them. Attach them with 3-inch carpenter nails.

    • 7

Nail 2-by-4 studs into the wood frame on 48-inch centers by driving nails from the sides of each end of the stud into the frame-board.

    • 8

Install the door, available from the home improvement store, to the wood dressing room in the space where the frame was left in the wall, according to package directions.

    • 9

Hang drywall on both sides of the wood frame with drywall screws. Use drywall joint compound and tape to cover the drywall seams according to package directions. Paint the inside of the dressing room a light neutral color. Make-up, hair color and the colors of clothes will be more definitive in a neutral-colored dressing room. Paint the outside drywall the same color as the existing room.

Place the mirror, open closet, dressing bench and dressing/make-up table in the wood dressing room to your design specifications.
