How to Troubleshoot a Cordless Drill Battery

The invention of the cordless drill, has made the life of every carpenter easier. A cordless drill runs on a battery that needs regular charging. Batteries have a certain amount of cycle counts before they are used up. A cycle count is one full run-down and recharge of the battery. Once the cycle count limit is reached, the battery will begin to lose power. Test your battery if you suspect it is broken using a voltmeter.

Instructions

    • 1

Run your battery down until it is completely empty then plug it into the charger. Let the charger sit for an hour to get a partial charge.

    • 2

Set your voltmeter to a 24 volt setting.

    • 3

Touch the probes of the voltmeter to the positive and negative ends of the battery, indicated by the plus and minus sign on the battery itself.

    • 4

Look at the volt reading. The reading should be at the rated volts for the battery (for example 14.4) or slightly above. Two volts above is a healthy battery. If the battery is below the rated voltage the battery is bad and needs replaced.
