How to Make a Portable Miter Saw Stand

Miter saw stands provide support when cutting long wood pieces. Portable miter saw stands allow for ease of setup and mobility around job sites. Building the stand involves the use of material commonly found at local lumber companies. Folding sawhorses are used to support the work surface. Storage for the stand is major consideration in the design process.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark eight of the 2-by-4's at the 24-inch mark, then cut the pieces with a saw.

    • 2

Lay two of the remaining 8-foot 2-by-4's on their edges, parallel with each other on the work surface. Mark them in the middle (four foot).

    • 3

Measure the width of the miter saw base and divide in half. That should be the distance between the two 24-inch 2-by-4's which will be placed on each sid eof the miter saw in later steps.

    • 4

Place two of the 24-inch 2-by-4's perpendicular at each end of the 8-foot pieces. These pieces should also be on their edge. Make sure the corners are aligned flush, so that you have a rectangle 24 inches wide, 8 feet long. Attach the pieces with a drill and 3-inch screws.

    • 5

Place a 24-inch 2-by-4 on the top of each end of the assembled pieces. These pieces must be placed on their edge, perpendicular to the 8-foot pieces and on top of the previously attached 24-inch pieces.

    • 6

Fasten the 2-by-4's by drilling 1 1/4-inch drywall screws through the 24-inch 2-by-4 into the 8-foot 2-by-4's on both sides by angling and "toe-nailing" the screw.

    • 7

Install a 24-inch 2-by-4 on the saw base marks made previously. The position of these blocks is on each side of designated location for the miter saw.

    • 8

Install another 24-inch block between the end block and the one on the side of the miter saw. Do this on both sides of the designated location for the saw. Center this block between the two previously installed.

    • 9

Set up the sawhorses approximately seven feet apart.

    • 10

Lay the assembled 2-by-4 frame on the sawhorses.

    • 11

Place the miter saw in the designated area of the assembly and fasten it to the frame with 1 1/4-inch drywall screws.
