How to Use Impact Screwdrivers

Stripped or rusted screws can be a nightmare to remove. Normal screwdrivers may not offer enough grip on the screw or allow the required torque to turn it. Impact screwdrivers solve that problem by being driven by forceful hammering on the back of the impact screwdriver. When struck, the impact screwdriver is simultaneously forced into the screw, which improves grip, and torques the screw quickly from the increased force of the hammering.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the appropriate bit, according to the size and shape of the indentation on the end of the screw. Make sure the bit fits snugly into the indentation. Some screws also have a six-sided head, for which you can use a socket-style bit.

    • 2

Slide the bit into the end of the impact screwdriver.

    • 3

Place the tip of the impact screwdriver tightly into the end of the screw and hold the screwdriver firmly with one hand.

    • 4

Strike the end of the impact screwdriver forcefully with a hammer. The force will be driven through the internal mechanism, forcing it to turn while applying strong pressure onto the screw.

    • 5

Repeat hammering until the screw is removed or loosened enough to unscrew normally.
