Things You Can Put in Storage Jars

All that storage and nothing to store, you might think as you gaze upon your collection of empty storage jars. But there are actually countless ways to use them for storage. You can utilize storage jars for infusing liquor, growing plants, entertaining and even saving a buck or two. If it fits, store it in a jar.
  1. Infusion

    • A storage jar with an airtight lid can make an acceptable infusion jar for your cocktail. Measure the jar for its volume, then add the right proportions of flavor and liquor. Vodka, gin and other clear liquors work best at infusion; you can gauge the infusion level by the color. More opaque liquors can work as well with more limited flavorings. For example, you can add a piece of your favorite flavored bubblegum for every ounce of vodka to create a bubblegum vodka. Also, a sprig of rosemary will give you rosemary gin.

    Plants

    • You can use your storage jars to hold plants in your apartment or home by either growing the plants or flowers from seeds or transplanting them into a jar if the plant is not too large. To grow a plant from a seedling, pack the storage jar with fertilized soil and plant the seedling close to the top of the soil if the type of plant will do well using this method. If you are transplanting, then fill the storage jar about one- to two-fifths full, place the plant above the dirt and then fill the empty spaces around the plant with more soil. You can watch the roots of the plant grow through the glass.

    Candy Dish

    • Turn your storage jars into candy jars by filling them with your favorite candies. Putting your candy into a sealed storage jar can help retain the freshness of loose candies. Candy-filled jars, in addition to being colorful and decorative, are also great to place around the room at parties. The clear jars easily allow you to see when it's time for a refill.

    Piggy Bank

    • You can also store your wealth in a storage jar. Clear storage jars make excellent piggy banks, allowing you to easily gauge your at-home savings. Place the jar on your dresser and empty your pockets every night before bed. It will be full before you know it, ready to exchange for bills so you can start all over again.
