Hold a serrated knife sharpening tool in one hand. This is a round metal bar slightly tapered at the end with rough nail file-like texture. There are different grades of sharpeners similar to sandpaper, from super fine to fine to coarse. If you have a really dull knife, start with the coarse grade; otherwise, start with the fine.
Place the knife to the sharpener tool and position it on the first dip. Turn the blade so it is slightly angled against the tool and drag the knife back and forth across the tool in a quick motion. Do this a couple of times to sharpen, then move to the next dip. Repeat this all the way down the knife to sharpen the low areas of the serrated blade.
Place the knife against the sharpening tool again at the first serrated point and repeat the process. Continue this procedure to sharpen all the tips.
