How to Assemble a Rip Fence

Table saws are designed for cutting large pieces of plywood or other sheet goods and for ripping along the long edges of a piece of wood. In order to handle both tasks, a table saw needs to have a quality rip fence. A good rip fence should be able to be positioned at any location along the table, hold fast when locked in place and remain parallel to the saw blade at all times. It takes a few basic tools to assemble a rip fence for your table saw.

Things You'll Need

  • Table saw fence assembly
  • Rectangular tube front rail
  • Pencil
  • Cordless drill with bits
  • Mounting bolts with lock washers and nuts
  • Angle-iron back rail
  • Socket set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Allen wrenches

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the table saw's power cord from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Position the rectangular tubing along the front edge of the saw table, with the wider side of the tubing facing upward. Transcribe the hole locations from the table to the tubing with a pencil.

    • 3

Drill holes at the marked locations in the rectangular tubing. Attach the rectangular tubing to the front of the table by hand-tightening bolts, washers and nuts through the holes.

    • 4

Attach the angle iron back rail to the back side of the saw table in similar fashion to the front tubing. The protruding portion of the angle iron should be positioned below the mounted portion of the rail.

    • 5

Place the table saw fence assembly on top of the table, aligning the locking mechanism on the front of the fence with the front rail tubing.

    • 6

Adjust the height of the front and rear rails so that the fence assembly rides just slightly above the tabletop. Tighten all of the bolts and nuts with a socket set.

    • 7

Move the fence so that the left edge of the fence is aligned with the edge of one of the saw's miter slots. Adjust the adjustment screws on the front of the fence's locking mechanism with an Allen wrench until the fence is perfectly aligned with the miter slot.

Slide the fence to the right of the saw blade and raise the blade. Plug in the saw and make a test cut to ensure that the wood does not bind against the fence or the blade when cutting with the table saw.
